The exam results day is a rite of passage that we have all been through; in the distant past for some. The sleepless night beforehand, waking up at an unearthly hour in the morning and then the journey to school is something many of us will remember.
There was definitely nervous tension in the air as the students entered the 6th Form block to pick up their results. There were tears of joy, teenagers hugging and proud parents and staff.Certain sections of society bemoan how these exams do not reflect the standards of days gone by. I would concur but not in the sense that they have become easier but that they have become more challenging – in knowledge requirement, application and interpretation. A young person sitting an average of 8 GCSEs would have sat 20 exams totalling 30 hours. In a time when there has been much turmoil in the education system our 16 year olds for the most part have risen to the challenge. The results gained by this cohort of young people will lay the foundation for the next chapter in their educational journey. It is a testament to their hard work, the excellence of their teachers and the great support they receive at home from parents and carers.
