Sir Ian McKellan

On Tuesday 7th March we were lucky enough to welcome the amazing Sir Ian McKellan to school! As a Stonewall Champion school, he visited us to talk to students about LGBT related issues and the importance of having an inclusive community. Sir Ian arrived at school with a Stonewall representative and met with senior team, including Mr Edwards. He then presented for just over an hour to 280 students from a range of year groups. He spoke passionately and honestly about his early life as a gay man living in London and drew on his own experiences to highlight the importance of diversity, tolerance and inclusivity – things that, as a school, we pride ourselves on. He very kindly agreed to sign lots of things for both staff and students, and had many selfies taken! He then met and had lunch with the diversity committee and LGBT group that was established last year by a group of our 6th form students. The students were in awe and listened intently as he told tales of his experiences as a gay man and the passion he has for Stonewall.
